Vrikshamla (Garcinia combogia) , also known as Garcinia, contains an organically active compound that is known to inhibit the synthesis of lipids and fatty acids and lower the formation of LDL and triglycerides. Garcinia or Vrikshamla also contains significant amounts of Vitamin C or ascorbic acid and has been used as a heart tonic. Studies suggest that this natural extract may also inhibit the conversion of excess calories to body fat. Furthermore, appetite is also suppressed by promoting synthesis of glycogen. Glycogen is the stored form of glucose, one of the body's primary sources of energy. Amplified glycogen production and storage is the body's normal way of signaling the brain's satiety centre that enough food has been eaten.
This has made Garcinia or Vrikshamla a very successful herbal medicine for controlling obesity and cholesterol. It is a well recognized fat burning agent all over the world and is currently becoming a rage in America, Japan, Europe and many other western nations. It is suggested as a dieting aid supported by exercise and a balanced nutritional diet.

- Garcinia helps in reducing body’s capability to store fat.
- Decreases body weight through appetite control.
- Lowers serum triglycerides.
- Creates a method in the body called thermo genesis.
- Helps with catarrhal conditions of the throat, urinary system, and uterus.
- Garcinia or Vrikshamla has also been considered to make foods more filling and satisfying.
- Garcinia or Vrikshamla is capable to decrease the acidity and to increase the mucosal defense in the gastric areas, thereby justifying its use as an anti-ulcerogenic agent.
- Vrikshamla does not contain any addictive ingredients and can be taken without fear of addiction for extended periods of time.
- Garcinia or Vrikshamla also contains significant amounts of Vitamin C or ascorbic acid and has been used as a heart tonic.
- Garcinia or Vrikshamla when taken over a period of time, slows down the production of fat and helps the body metabolize it more competently.
Introduction: Many researches on Garcinia are been published to establish its weight-loss ability by slowing down production of fat and the body to metabolize it more efficiently.
STUDY: When Garcinia or Vrikshamla extract and insulin were added concurrently, the accumulation of lipid droplets was inhibited and the peak droplet area shifted to become smaller (10-20 micron). The activities of glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, a marker of adipose differentiation, were not considerably inhibited by the Garcinia or Vrikshamla extract.
CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the Garcinia or Vrikshamla extract inhibits lipid droplet accumulation in fat cells without affecting adipose conversion.
Physico-chemical properties of a novel (-)-hydroxycitric acid extract derived from Garcinia or Vrikshamla and its effect on body weight, selected organ weights, hepatic lipid per-oxidation and DNA fragmentation, hematology and clinical chemistry, and histo-pathological changes over a period of 3 months.
Mol Cell Biochem. 2004 May;260(1-2):171-86.
RESULTS: The findings show that 3 months treatment of HCA-SX results in a reduction in body weight, and do not cause any changes in major organs or in hematology, clinical chemistry, and histopathology.
Body weight and abdominal fat gene expression profile in retort to a novel hydroxycitric acid-based dietary supplement.
Gene Expr. 2004;11(5-6):251-62.
CONCLUSION: Under the current experimental conditions, HCA-SX proved to be efficient in restricting body weight gain in adult rats. Functional characterization of HCA-SX-sensitive genes revealed that upregulation of genes encoding serotonin receptors represents a distinct effect of dietary HCA-SX supplementation.
Effect of Garcinia or Vrikshamla extract on serum leptin and insulin in mice.
Fitoterapia. 2003 Apr;74(3):267-73.
In this study we examined the effects of 3.3% Garcinia or Vrikshamla extract on 10 percent sucrose loading in mice for 1 month. Treatment was found to have no effect on body weight, fat pad weight or serum glucose level. On the other hand, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, NEFA was observed. Levels of serum insulin and leptin, as well as the leptin/WAT ratio, were inferior in the treated mice than in the control.
CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that Garcinia or vrikshamla extract efficiently improved glucose metabolism and displayed leptin-like activity.
Effects of (-)-hydroxycitric acid on appetitive variables.
Mattes RD, Bormann L. Purdue University, 212 Stone Hall, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1264, USA.
Physiol Behav. 2000 Oct 1-15;71(1-2):87-94.
(-)-Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) reportedly encourages weight loss, in part, through suppression of hunger. Though, this mechanism has never been evaluated in humans in a controlled study. No effects of the HCA were observed on appetitive variables. The active treatment group did not displayed better dietary compliance or significant association between appetitive variables and energy intake or weight change. This study does not support a satiety effect of HCA.

Garcinia or Vrikshamla (hydroxycitric acid) as a potential anti-obesity agent: a randomized controlled trial.
Heymsfield SB. obesity Research Center, St Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, USA.
CONCLUSION: Garcinia or Vrikshamla failed to produce noteworthy weight loss and fat mass loss beyond that observed with placebo. |
