Cholesterol is a soft and wax like substance found in our bloodstream .It is also present in our body cells. Most of the cholesterol which our body possess is not of dietary origin but is synthesized by our body to counter the needs. Cholesterol is present in higher concentrations in tissues which either produce more or have more densely-packed membranes, for example, the liver, spinal cord and brain.
Higher level of cholestrol in blood (hypercholesterolemia) is dangerous and is the major causative factor of heart disease that ultimately leads heart attack.. Cholesterol plays an imprortant role in many biochemical processes and is well known for its association with cardiovascular disease.
As per its property, cholestrol is not dissolveable blood hence it is transpoted by special cholestrol carrier protiens called lipoprotien.
These lipoprotiens which are of our concern are of two types:
Low-density lipoprotein : Low-density lipoprotein commonly called LDL is the major cholesterol carrier protein in the blood. High amount of LDL can lead to creation of wall in the arteries generally of heart and brain and with other substances, may build up plaque formation called arteriosclerosis. A high level of LDL cholesterol (160 mg/dl and above) increases risk of heart disease. If a person has a heart disease then his LDL cholesterol should be less than 100 mg/dl. This is the reason why LDL cholesterol is considered "bad" cholesterol. A lower level of LDL cholesterol indicates lower risk of heart disease.
High-density lipoprotein: High-density lipoprotein is commonly known as HDL and carries about one third to one fourth of the cholesterol. Experts are of the opinion that HDL carries cholesterol away from the arteries, back to the liver, where it is passed out of the body. Some are of the opinion that HDL removes excess cholesterol from plaques, thus slowing their formation. HDL cholesterol is known as "good" cholesterol as high HDL level protect against major heart disease causing heart attack and vice versa i.e. a low HDL level (less than 40 mg/dl in men; less than 50 mg/dl in women) indicates a greater risk. A low HDL cholesterol level in body indicates higher risk of heart disease.
- Smoking causes rise in LDL level
- Alcohol is another culprit in raising cholesterol levels.
- Eating of high fat diet will increase level of LDL
- Obesity
- May occur in heredity
- Stress and overwork load.
- Exercising and reducing one's weight will increase HDL cholesterol and lower LDL cholesterol.
- Hypercholesterolemia can also be an inherited problem that affects the way the body processes cholesterol.
- Any disease that raises LDL level such as diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, liver disease, or hypothyroidism, can also cause Hypercholesterolemia.
Hypercholesterolemia is silent i.e. presents no clinical picture .it comes into knowledge when routine checkups are done or when medicals tests are conducted regarding any other problem.
