In Ayurveda Arthritis is commonly known as ‘Amavata’ which means joints and vat is usually prominence cause in this disease. This is mainly caused by the production and circulation of a substance called ‘ama’ in the body. Improper digesting as well as metabolism produces this ‘AMA’ and it gets logged in joints to produce inflammation and pain. This ailment is caused due to the aggravation of Vata (air) dosha. So Ama must be digested and Vata reduced in the body.
Ayurveda attempts to remove the ama from the joint and bring it back to the colon, and then to eliminate it. To do this, we need to keep the colon clean. Take 2 Morpheme Triphala VegiCaps (Amalaki, Haritaki, Bibhitaki) at night for colon cleansing.
Massage therapy can soothe pain, relax stiff muscles, and reduce the swelling that accompanies arthritis. Massage and gentle stretching help maintain a joint's range of motion.
Arthcare oil improves mobility of limbs and removes stiffness. It is great for pre and post workouts as well as pain from injuries, strains and arthritis. The sensation is much like having an ice pack on the effected area.
It reduces swelling when massaged over the affected area. This heating oil is efficacious in relieving pain associated with rheumatism and arthritis; also with pain associated with pitta and ama (toxins) conditions, or in cases of pain localized in the many areas of the body (waist, back, sides, joints, etc.), or generalized pain all over the body with slight rise of temperature. Massaging with this oil opens the pores and removes disorders of the skin. |

2. Camphor: (Karpura, Cinnamonum Camphora) Camphor is a penetrating, medicinal oil derived from the tropical tree, Cinnamonium camphora. When rubbed into painful, stiff joints, ligaments and muscles, it provides soothing "camphor-ice" relief. One mechanism of action of camphor is that it specifically inhibits catecholamine secretion.
3. Wintergreen Oil: Oil of wintergreen has chemical properties similar to salicylic acid- an aspirin like compound with arthritis pain relief properties.
4. Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata, Vanda roxburghii): Highly effective for backaches, muscular sprains and joint pains. The root of the plant is found Effective in inflammations, rheumatic disorders, osteoarthritis and allied disorders.

Guggulipid is a potent anti-inflammatory agent, as evidenced by many studies done on individuals with arthritis. The compound primarily responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties of guggul is myrrhanol A, which is found in the acidic fraction of the extract
6. Erand (Ricinus communis): Also known as castor seeds, it contains alkaloid ricine and toxalbumine ricin which yield a fixed oil. It is very good for cleansing ama (toxins) from the body. 7. Ashwagandha (Winter Cherry): The root of ashwagandha contain traces of an essential oil which is effective in the treatment of rheumatic affections. Its anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties help with arthritis. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, 42 patients with osteoarthritis received a formula containing ashwagandha or placebo for three months. Patients were evaluated for one month, prior to treatment, during which time all previous drugs were withdrawn. During both the pre-treatment and treatment phase, pain and disability scores were evaluated weekly. The herb Ashwagandha significantly reduced the severity of pain and disability scores for arthritis.
8. Devdaru (Cedrus deodara): It is acute and pungent in action. This is one of the most useful drugs which though not very much used separately, is used in combination with other antipyretics. It has anti-inflammatory activity.
9. Rasone (Garlic, Allium sativum): Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used throughout the world for gout and Rheumatism. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, hypolipidemic, anticoagulant, hypoproteinemic, hypocholesteremic, antibacterial, antifungal, antihypertensive and hypoglycemic action.
10. Krishna Marich (Pepper, Piper nigrum) : The mechanism of piperine's putative anti-inflammatory activity may be accounted for, in part, by piperine's possible antioxidant activity. Black pepper has demonstrated impressive antioxidant and antibacterial effects
11. Sesame oil (Til Oil): Amongst the various types of oils both fixed and essential ones, Ayurveda advocates sesame oil as the foremost one. 13. Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi): Ayurveda has counted ajwain among the 10 foremost herbs known for their anti-colic or anti-spasmodic action. Besides endowed with carminative, diuretic and diaphoretic (that produces sweating) properties, ajwain is also known for its stimulant action on the uterus and the digestive and circulatory systems. It also has moderately anti-pyretic and mildly antiseptic effect on the human body.
14. Gandhaprasarini (Paederia foetida): It inhibited the elevation of serum orosomucoid levels in rats, suggesting the possibility of the presence of disease-modifying antirheumatic activity. The results indicate that there is some rationale behind the ethnomedical use of the plant for treating inflammatory disorders. - Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research, Gujarat Ayurved University, India.
